Santuari de Meritxell

> Meritxell Sanctuary. Meritxell

The existing Sanctuary of Meritxell, patron saint of Andorra, is a contemporary church designed by Catalan architect Ricard Bofill and opened in 1976. It is an eclectic construction, a synthesis of the work of man and the surrounding landscape, an inspired mixture of various styles. A reproduction of the Romanesque carving of the Mare de Déu de Meritxell presides over the altar, as the original was lost in a fire in 1972.
Inside the old sanctuary, now restored, is an exhibition entitled “Memories of Meritxell”.
The saint’s day is 8 September, the Diada of Meritxell, the national day.
